legitpro
I was looking at the CaRMS web page and I noticed only one type of residency program. Is everyone who graduated from NOSM expected to go into family medicine?
Tango Charlie
No. A fair number do of their own volition, but they have a wide range of specialties coming from NOSM. They actually had excellent placement for even very competitive residencies as well.

MamboVipi
I have a question that may be silly, but can you apply to an ER fellowship if you graduate from NOSM? I'm not entirely sure how fellowships even work, do you need to do a residency first?

Nice, I didn't even know they offered ortho surg I have a question that may be silly, but can you apply to an ER fellowship if you graduate from NOSM? Graduate med school --> residency [ --> optional fellowship ] If you want an ER fellowship, you'd need a 2 year FM residency then apply for the ER fellowship
MamboVipi
good god. So its 7 years after I finish med school? Or does the 2 years come out of the 5 year fellowship? One of the MDs I spoke with at work didn't mention the residency part to me so I just assumed you did the fellowship instead of the residency... MamboVipi
oh my gosh, what have I been thinking- I have no idea how this whole become a doctor thing works! So each school only lets you do your residency in certain fields AND they tell you which cities you're allowed to apply to do them in? So if I went to an international med school and wanted to come back for my residency I could apply to go to any city? in any field?

Three years after med school (2 year family medicine residency plus 1 year EM training) or 5 years after med school (5 year EM residency). http://www.carms.ca/eng/r3_about_intro_e.shtml https://w1c.e-carms.ca/pdws/jsp/pd.do?d=892&p=p3&m=1 (NB: not all positions are listed yet)
