When do residency programs begin?

Can anyone tell me when residency programs begin? Is it usually around the 1st of July? Do all programs at all schools start on the same day?

There may be mandatory orientation just preceding official start on July 1st.

Although I officially started on the first of July, it's a holiday and, being family med, our orientation only started on the 4th (the following Monday). (Not all family med programs had this arrangement though, but many do).

Thanks for your responses! I am wondering this because I am trying to plan a wedding and I am not sure when would be a good time to do it. Do you get holidays during residency? I am hoping to do family medicine... not sure if holidays work differently depending on the program.

It depends on your provincial contract, school, and program. Everyone gets holidays during residency, but the amount of time you can get off at one time, and the process for requesting time off will vary. Some schools give you one 4-week block out of the first clinical year as vacation, whereas others allow you to request time off in pieces throughout the year. As a family medicine resident, you will have off-service rotations, where you usually follow that service's process for vacation requests, so it depends on what rotation you will be on at the time. Usually clinic rotations are more flexible. Just get your request in as soon as possible.
