Asking a client to write a reference letter?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm volunteering as a personal trainer right now, and I'm wondering if I can ask my client whom I know for a year to write me a reference letter? I feel like my client has known me better than my supervisor. Would this jeopardize my application or is there any rule that states reference letter can only be written by your supervisor?

Thanks a million,

MedHunter

Only do so if you are satisfied that the client can write a more credible and stronger letter. Remember, in the Confidential Assessment Form it is likely that the referee will be asked how many students you are being compared to. A prof may say 1500 students, a Supervisor nay say 500, but a client may say 2 students or 5 and with that his reference may prove to become somewhat irrelevant. An inexperienced referee may inadvertantly do more harm than good! I have had such an experience myself. There is more to this than what meets the eye.
