canuck
To be guaranteed an internship in australia, you need to be a permanent resident, citizen or new zealand resident/citizen. As an international student you are at the bottom of the list when it comes to getting an internship spot. That being said, many internationals have been successful obtaining internship spots in the past, but its getting really tough nowdays with the influx of Australian grads

canuck
Would it be impossible for international meds to apply permanent residentship? Not impossible to get but its hard. Aussie immigration works on a points system, which means you gotta have a certain profession which is in need eg.physician, nurse etc. to meet the requirements. Without internship or residency training you wont be able to apply for permanent residency...unless you marry an Australian citizen. The hard part is obtaining the internship. IF you do get a spot, you can apply and shouldn't have any issues becoming perm resident.

keepontrying
it's hard, period. i don't think any of us can tell you exactly how difficult it is, but of course some states are easier to get an internship than others because of fewer competition. it will only get tougher to match into a competitive specialty afterward since you most likely won't be interning at major hospitals (all spots given to citizens, PR already). bottom line is, the playing time will NEVER be equal. the only school that allows you to maintain your medical seat as PR if you manage to become one during medical school is ANU, so you can look into that.
