Are summer courses generally included in the GPA? Because of professional commitments, summer and part-time courses are my only options right now. Anyone have experience with this? Any info is appreciated.

Hey there flyboy1913,

It's tough to talk generalizations when it comes to Canadian med schools--reason being, they all have their own way of executing the selection process, including the treatment of summer courses. Some schools will not include summer courses in the overall GPA calculation, e.g., UT; however, some do, e.g., McMaster. Others may include your summer courses and may, in fact, factor them in twice or three times. An example of the latter is UBC which calculates a score for each of the following: "pre-requisite" courses; your last 60 credits; and your overall GPA. So if you were to take organic chemistry as a summer course, for example, then it will be included in all three calculations and thus, will factor in three times to your evaluation in the UBC selection process.

The best thing to do to make sure that you've got the most up to date and accurate information at hand when mapping out your academic plans is to keep up to date with the latest schools' literature and ideally, speak to them directly. Again, not only does the process differ from school to school, but it can also differ year to year for the exact same school.

Cheers,

Kirsteen
