tomato7
Hello, I am doing my residency training in the States (ACGME training) and I'm interested in coming back to Canada to practice (as a general internist). What are some of the obstacles for coming back to Canada (besides having to take MCCQE 1and 2) and what are the requirements that I would have to fulfill to be able to practice in Canada. Thanks for your help.
moo
You need to make sure length of training is equivalent to Canadian training. That means you need to do an extra year at least of GIM if you want to do GIM. (There is now a 2 year fellowship for GIM in Canada that you can probably apply for. YOu will be a subspecialist in general internal med). Once the Royal College gives you the OK to take the exam, and you pass, you pretty much have the option to work anywhere in Canada. Of note, the Royal College considers all ACGME accredited residencies equivalent to Canadian training, but the length of training is what hangs people up the most.
