Self-Directed What Now?

What is self-directed learning? I'm really trying to avoid piling on the bs for these apps, and so far I've succeeded, but I'm not sure how to hoestly answer the question on the Queen's app about self-directed learning. Does research count? In what way?

<pagetext>Here's my situation; I have done highschool bio and chem, and I have all the neccesary prerequisites for university. However, I am not too confident that I am prepared for my first year chem and biology. So my question is, how much review do u generally do in your first year sciences? Would someone who feels that the highschool material they learned was mediocre at best still fair well in the first year of university? Do you get ample opportunity to get up to speed or would one be best served to buy some highschool textbooks and go through them prior to the start of classes?
