hello once more. just a quick question. while at university i was a part of a coalition against corprate globalization (which morphed for the year into a coalition against deregulation...as some of you might have guessed by that i was at queens). i put a lot of time and energy into the coalition (organising activities and public appearances etc), time and energy that i could have been spending doing other volunteer activities if i had just been looking to pad my resume. i was wondering if it would be a severe mistake for me to fess up to being involved in that on my med school applications, seeing as many admissions committees are apparently rather old-school? advice much appreciated.

<title>Where do you draw the line?</title>

<pagetext>Dear All,

I have been reading alot of the posts lately and their seems to be a trend. While no admissions process is ideal, based on many of the posts in this forum:

- rule out Ottawa because they are rude and aggressive (eg Peter Hill Experience)

-rule out Toronto because their admissions process is flawed (according to Maxell)

-rule out UBC, also for flawed admissions

- rule out MAC because their system is apparently biased.

I am not convinced that these arguments are tenable. While people may feel they have been unjustly treated, that is reality and that is life. Not applying to a medical school in a future year due to a negative admissions experience will only hinder your own chances and increase the chances of the same type of people who got the spot instead of you. Emotions are running high at the moment and decisions that affect the course of people lives are being made. But these experiences are just part of life, and would present themselves even if the option of medicine was not available.

The medical admission process is flawed, but it may be the best for the moment. Are their people in Medical School who should NOT be there (very few!).

Are their qualified applicants getting rejected, yes by the hundreds. It is truly a case of..."there are many more highly qualified applicants than there are positions". At the end of the day, ALL medical schools in Canada are producing highly trained MD's and may people should focus on improving themselves, versus try to change the system. (The system CAN be changed, but doing so as an MD would likley be the best time, not as a disgruntled applicant.)
