e_is_hv
Hi All, If you are unfortunate enough this year to go completely unmatched (I'm sure none of us will!), when the 2013 match comes around, can you still enter the first iteration? Or are you banned from that and can only enter the second iteration? Many thanks!
Dany
Yes, as a prior-year CMG, you can enter the 1st iteration in all Canadian provinces http://www.carms.ca/eng/r1_eligibility_prov_e.shtml
ac84
Apply and match to family in 2nd iteration and at the same time get your letters together to apply broadly to NRMP next year for the competitive specialty. This way, you can potentially have the two years of family count as equivalent to your transitional year in the US (if programs won't accept this, then just drop your family in the 2nd year and find a transition year program) You could potentially be boarded in family in Canada and do short term locums for extra money in Canada while completing your specialty residency in the US. If it doesn't work the 1st year of your FM residency, try again the 2nd year. If that doesn't work, some provinces have retraining programs outside of carms to allow you to retrain in a different specialty in Canada, in the meantime you can make some money. It's probably worth picking something in round 2 from the leftovers to stay in medicine. Otherwise, be sure to do something impressive with your year off (MPH, big name research in a major american institution, work for the year in a developing country in a medical context relevant to your field of interest) CaRMS has statistics for success rates for those who reapply and they aren't pretty. Take into account your own situation and decide what's best for you.
