PEI medical students

Was reading the newspaper today (Globe and Mail) and there was an article about implementing mandatory ROS for PEI medical students @ MUN:

and the CFMS response:

PEI is a smaller, relatively poorer province. The fact that they did this/plan to do this isn't that big a surprise.

Until PEI starts getting more money for medicine development, none of the things outlined in CFMS's letter will happen. Heck, they don't even have their own medical school or faculty of medicine! Its 2012! :(

What if the medical student graduates to be an ophthalmologist or a neurosurgeon? How is he or she supposed to practice in PEI for 3 years? Run a walk-in clinic?

I guess the simple answer is yes or they do not want specialists. Had they thought it out properly, they would insist, like MOTP, that they go into Family Medicine. But then again, these are politicians who don't think beyond the next election.

There is zero prospect of PEI establishing its own medical school. Dal is responsible for all English-language medical education in the Maritimes (Sherbrooke has a satellite campus in Moncton), and otherwise Saint John is about as small as it gets for supporting a satellite campus.

The CFMS response is not entirely accurate - clerkship rotations in PEI are available not only in family, but in psych and peds. I cannot imagine how any residency programs aside from family med could be based there, though it's a good spot to do community rotations.

And how would this work for people who pursue residencies in specialties that are not available on PEI? Would the province ensure OR time for a urology grad as part of this ROS?

It's not even workable policy, aside from the unjust ROS.

Absolutely.

Am I missing something here? I do not see any requirement for residency in P.E.I. They say give us 3 years. They do not say in family medicine or any other field. And there is no offer to subsidize a doctor whatever the circumstances.
