Knightmd
Hey guys... I was just wondering, how essential is fluency in French for U of M residents? I've learned French for around 12 years, but I'm not comfortable writing/reading French regularly. If I match in a U of M program, will I be able to write my progress notes in English? History notes...etc? Can I speak to all nurses in English? Is the documentation exclusively written in French? Please do let me know. Thanks! r201
psychoswim
I'm pretty sure if you match at UdeM, you'll need to be able to write and understand progress notes and everything in French. Yes most residents and docs also speak English, but as far as I know all the documentation is written up in French. So you'd most likely be ok talking to your co-residents/attendings/nurses, but many patients don't speak English at all so that could be problematic (even at McGill it's a very good idea to be able to hold a conversation in French because of the patients). I'll say though that it doesn't take very long to really pick up the language when you're completely immersed in it.
Med0123
