haelmoon
Just for the record, OB/GYN is considered a surgical specialty, not a primary care specialty.
dashley
Haha I was just thinking that... everyone doesn't think they are surgeons, until they actually go see what they do in the OR!
BigM
Yep, they are surgeons. However, I believe in the states they are considered primary care (although still surgeons...)
ellorie
I think it has to do with the fact that in the US, OB/Gyns do a lot of women's primary care. When I lived in the US, I found that the OB/Gyn was sometimes the only doctor that a woman saw, and most women have their "own" Ob/GYN even for pap smears and routine stuff as opposed to in Canada whereas if you are generally healthy and don't have a specific gynecological issue, a family doc takes care of your primary care. NLengr
They aren't traditionally a surgical specialty, even though they do surgery. Also, they don't write the Principles of Surgery exam I believe.
thebouque
Depends on what you do. Few surgeons I know would consider C-sections surgery. They're pretty rudimentary: cut, cut more, retract, pull out kid, sew it up. End. Then those surgeons who wouldn't consider C-section surgery know very little about surgery (even if they are surgeons).
clementine
Actually, they do write the principles of surgery exam!
thebouque
Yeah they're really full fledged surgeons. It's a competitive specialty, and in Quebec it's very competitive, a lot more than anesthesia.
NLengr
Actually, they do write the principles of surgery exam! They do? I can't recall that and according to the college they don't http://rcpsc.medical.org/residency/certification/objectives/surgical_foundations_otr_e.pdf At my center they do come to the classes though. Is this a new change for this year? (which would be good because they are a surgeons and I don't see why they don't write it like therestof the surgical specialties).
