Guest physiology
There's an ENT spot at McMaster that was unfilled! WOWERS. I thought that was uber competitive (right up there with plastics and derm?) Other interesting ones are the unfilled spots in neurosurgery at U of C, numerous anaesthesia residences (mainly in the Maritimes), and a few orthopedics spots (Alberta and Ottawa I believe). I thought also nuclear medicine would be super competitive at UBC (which was unfilled) because if you check their site, you can do combined nuclear medicine and radiology (extends your residency to 6 years though, one year "internship", and 2 in nuc med, and 3 in radiology). Do you think that it has to do with the quality of the residency program at each university?
Guest aneliz
The ENT spot is probably left over because the US match was first...people that really, really, really wanted ENT (because it *is* an uber competitive specialty) probably applied in the states as well. The US has many more ENT programs, thus a much higher chance of matching... So, if they did match in the States, which is more than likely, they would have been automatically pulled from CaRMS. So, it is not that much of a surprise to me that there is an ENT spot open.... The reason that there are two OB/GYN spots in Saskatchewan is due to the 'quality' of the program....it is having some accreditation issues right now.... I have no idea what is up with the other programs at other schools though... ----------------------- The word from UWO: There are 6 people unmatched in the class of 2004 There are 3(?) people that matched into the States and 1 going to England (?). Guest aneliz
The UWO stats come directly from the UWO class of 2004...they are very willing to tell anybody who asks what is going on with 'the match' in their class and they were sitting around the LRC computers all day... Guest gucio93
Here is the info from the executive director at CaRMS: To summarize, there are 177 positions vacant, and 71 unmatched applicants with 64 who are current graduates and 7 who are prior year graduates. The unmatched students are distributed across all of the schools and are as follows: Memorial - 2 McMaster - 4 Dalhousie - 5 + 1 prior Western - 6 + 1 prior Montreal - 1 Manitoba - 5 McGill - 9 + 1 prior Saskatchewan - 1 + 1 prior Ottawa - 5 Alberta - 3 + 1 prior Queen’s - 4 Calgary - 8 + 1 prior Toronto - 5 + 1 prior UBC -
Guest Kirsteen
Hi there, Thanks for posting the above information, gucio93. So from what I'm reading, is it possible that all 7 of the 7 prior graduates went unmatched for two years in a row? Cheers, Kirsteen
Guest byjude
What would make someone a bad matcher? Is it just that they are too picky with their choices and aim for competitive specialties? Could it be that they don't interview well (doesn't seem that likely given that they got into medicine)? Bad reference letter? What would make someone an un-ideal pick in the CaRMS selection process? Aside from just being less attractive than their peers (in terms of less research or not as stellar reference letter)?
Guest Ian Wong
That ENT program at Mac is a new program (this is its first year), which was likely the reason it wasn't too favoured. Basically, as the incoming resident(s) to that program, you are starting as the only residents, and as a result, don't have the resources of fellow resident colleagues from whom to talk to, learn from, cover shifts with, etc. There's a lot of uncertainty from being the guinea pig for a new residency position, and as a result, it wasn't a popular pick. ENT also had an interesting phenomenon attached to it this year. Last year WAS a crazy year for ENT, with 40 applicants applying for 12 spots. Not all of those 40 applicants received or attended interviews, and the result was a 54% match rate for those who did interview in ENT. Last year was the most competitive year for ENT in a long time, certainly over the last 5 years, if not more. This year, there were both less applicants to ENT (likely that some people were a bit intimidated by the numbers; people often tend to self-select out based on their competitiveness when they apply for residencies), and a huge increase in residency spots (from 12 to 17). As a result, this year's applicants had their pick of interviews, and that bore out in the fact that an ENT spot was unfilled this year, which is something that essentially never happens; this could very well be the first time in CaRMS history that this has occurred. I can guarantee you when the CaRMS statistics come out that this year's ENT match rate will be significantly higher than the 54% of last year. Nucs at UBC also went unfilled, which is interesting. As far as I know, you need to be accepted into the Radiology program as well to do the combined Nucs/Rads program, so it's not really a back door into Radiology. Nucs is a cool field all its own however, and I'm surprised that they didn't fill. It will most assuredly fill in the second round. Ian
Guest physiology
Hello Ian, How much patient interaction would you get with nuclear medicine and radiology? Do you get to tell people in person waht their diagnoses are? And as a pathologist, how much (alive) patient interaction do you get?

Guest CaesarCornelius
I have a question. Say you applied to ENT and had interviews etc... and come unmatch day you get the 'bad news' that you didn't match. You check the list of unfilled positions and see one ENT spot left over. Could you apply to that place if: a) you applied there and had an interview already you applied to other ENT programs but not that one in the first round. Maybe someone could also tell me how people go about taking second round positions? DO you just call and say "Hey, I want to take this leftover, second choice spot!" or do you have to go for an interview as well?? CC
Guest Carolyn
CC - not sure exactly how your sample scenario would work... I guess you could contact the programme director of that school and ask if they would reconsider you and then reapply through the second match. For whatever reason in the sample you suggest, the PD of that programme didn't even rank you so they may have 1 ) been sure they were going to get a certain applicant or 2) really felt that you were a poor fit for the programme. With respect to the logistics of the 2nd round, I'm not sure. I think it is just a sped up version of the 1st with many interviews happening by phone in many cases. It was interesting that the Ottawa EM programme went unmatched... Potentially for similar reasons to Ian's explanation of the Mac ENT. Ottawa only takes one resident every other year. With all other programs being anywhere from 10 - 20 strong in terms of numbers of residents in the programme, it would be a very different environment for residents interested in EM... for some it would be great, I personally like a bit larger of a size of programme. I guess this year, they didn't have someone in their list that was interested in the smaller programme. In many ways it is too bad... they have an excellent research setup there. good luck to everyone today...
Guest mollybear
I don't know much about ENT.....just wondering...why is it so uber-competitive? Mollybear
Guest aneliz
When there are only 12 (now 17) spots in the entire country for a surgical specialty....it is bound to be competitive. Basically the laws of supply and demand.... when there were only 12 spots (and 13 English speaking med schools)....that meant that there was less than one spot per graduating class...and usually each class would have at least one ENT keener in it....sometimes 3 or 4.... ENT does interesting work....has a reasonable lifestyle and good pay....so that makes it a popular choice....along with a very limited number of position = uber competitive. Guest Ian Wong
Could you apply to that place if: a) you applied there and had an interview already you applied to other ENT programs but not that one in the first round. The answer is an emphatic yes. The second round is a little crazy, but basically there's deadlines for re-sending your application. You can get new letters of reference, write a new personal statement, etc. Then, you may do a telephone interview, or at some programs, actually fly out for a set of interviews. I believe you then rank your programs, and wait for Match Day for the second round. As for how successful you'd be in the second round, that's up for debate; who really knows why you didn't get in the first time, and what you could change to fix that? Ian PS: McMasterGirl, all the best for MedGen! It's a really cool field, and just reinventing itself all the time. I hope you got your #1!!! Guest marbledust
Congrats on your match! Just out of curiousity, what got you interested/helped you decide on medical genetics as a specialty? Did you have a background in genetics prior to med school? Denfinately one of the most interesting fields of medicine in my opinion. Unfortunately my lack of scientific aptitude disqualifies it as a future specialty for me :b

Clerkship is going well...have finished Peds and Ob/Gyne (well...I'm on call tommorow, but then I'm done...) and then on tot he wonderful world of surgery (in St. Catherines, which hopefully won't be as stressful as MUMC, HGH or St. Joes'!). Congrats again!!
Guest McMastergirl
Thank you for the congrats!! To answer your questions, Marbledust... I did do a Masters in genetics before med school, and my original plan was to become a genetic counsellor. However, while preparing for that, I met an MD specializing in clinical genetics and I decided that was the way to go for me. Please don't count yourself out of any career in medicine! You must have scientific aptitude if you are in medical school...All you need for medical genetics is interest, and you already have that. You learn a lot of the science in residency anyway. I would be happy to answer any questions you or anyone else has about this underrated and underappreciated field!!!!! McMaster girl
Guest arar
Hi! Although still a meds applicant (first-year hopeful, fingers crossed ), the med gen residency program is very interesting to me. Do you have any info regarding what a "typical day" would be like (ie. how much patient time, how much research time, etc). I've been looking around and can't find much regarding the clinical geneticist "lifestyle", since it is a relatively rare specialty. Any info you can share would be great! arar
Guest Kirsteen
Hi there McMastergirl, I second arar's post. I have a few books on selecting a residency, etc., and there often seems to be little explanation as to the intricacies of the specialty of Medical Genetics. How would a Medical Geneticist MD's role differ from that of a genetics counselor, for example? Well done matching into the residency that your heart desired! Cheers, Kirsteen
