Head Squeeze
I have completes my first year with a decent GPA but now I need some help with choosing my major. I am considering only two options: biology or chemistry. Biology calendar offers more electives compared to chemistry and looks comparatively easier (less labs etc). I have no idea how scoring each one is. I think I can do either one but biology doesn't have a good career prospect if in case I do not get in medical school. If you have any experience with these majors, please contact me. I do not have much time to think. Thanks

I highly suggest you sit down in a quite room and think about the pros/cons because your on the wrong path right now. Less labs has no thing to do with easiness unless you've actually done the labs. Most 1st year labs at my school give good grades at least.
Head Squeeze
less labs would give me more time to study. no?
Lucky?
Honestly afaik neither bio nor chem are super hardcore programs where you need to worry about "having more time to study". Just pick the one you enjoy most, because that's the one in which you will do better.
Pistachio9
In my opinion in theory chem and bio should be similar in terms of difficulty and time needed to study in general. However in practice I think chemistry degrees are some of the more difficult ones to get good grades in in general (ie. ochem classes, phys chem, analytical chem - they are all pretty difficult subjects). Im saying all of this from my experience with friends etc at UCalgary.
UofTkid
chemistry degree has most courses with lab-component. Weekly 4 hours lab, I did them all in my 4 years. Plus they have pre-lab work + require data sheet + lab reports. At the end, none of the lab work matters because final is still weighed heavily for your grades. Thus it will be better to have courses where learning material directly leads to grades rather den getting side tracked by 1/100 (overall grade) quiz marks every week. claire_tea
As a UVic grad, I would go with Biology. Based on my experiences with the classes, and friends that have majored in both areas, Biology students tended to have higher GPAs.

jerkstore
Are you choosing BIO or CHEM because they are "pre-med" degrees?

Thanks In terms of career prospects I would say both Bio or Chem Bachelor degrees are unlikely to get you a career (unless you are in chemical engineering or pharmacology I guess?) While in my experience students in bio tend to have higher GPA than ppl in chem, I would actually recommend a Bio/Chem double major if you are interested in both areas (unless you are interested in going for a really specific specialist program). That will give you more exposures to different areas, more research opportunities towards med or Masters, and a more open Masters program choice. However, this would also depend on the school you go to, so it will perhaps help more if you talk to an upper year from your school. In my experience (and I am not sure if this is school specific), the choice of major in your second year is nothing set in stone. You can easily switch into any other major at anytime if your grades are decent AND you are on the path to finishing the REQUIRED CREDITS for the degree you desire. I switched my major 3 times in 4 years and in the end stuck with my last one half a year before applying for convocation. Granted, all 3 majors are in the realm of biological science and have similar required credits so I was able to finish. Point is, even if you choose to pursue, say, bio major, in your second year, you can still change your major into a chm or a double major in 3rd and 4th year, granted that you are aware of the degree requirements. However, again, not sure if this is school specific so check with your school
