Guest Ian Wong
BC is not easy. We traditionally don't have any unmatched positions remaining after both rounds of the match, which is in contrast to several other Canadian provinces. In 2001, only McGill and Toronto had fewer unmatched positions after the first round of the match. We had 4 unmatched spots, while Toronto and McGill had 1 vacancy apiece. www.carms.ca/stats/stats21.htm#vacant1 As far as how difficult the residency is to obtain, it's due in large part to the specialty and location of that program. If a given specialty or location draws more applicants, it's going to be harder to get into. Derm is real hard to get into in large part because there are so few positions across Canada! Last year, 13 individuals (all of whom likely had high grades, good reference letters, and research), applied for 5 Derm spots across Canada. Therefore, your chances of getting this residency are significantly less than 50%! www.carms.ca/stats/stats21.htm#choices Ian UBC, Med
