medicare coverage

Is there a universal (meaning Canadian-wide) agreement to what procedures are covered by medicare and which aren't...or can it vary province to province?

Along the same lines, as new technology and treatments develop, how does this coverage get updated? I know it's based on "medically-necessary" procedures, but obviously there is a large fuzzy zone. Anyone have any thoughts/info?

Hey M,

Apparently, the vast majority of "medically necessary" treatments are covered across the country, however, there is still considerable variation from province-to-province-to-territory. If you check out the Canada Health Act, it is pretty vague with respect to what is covered (it just says "medically necesary" and stuff that is normally done in a hospital).

The Romanow report makes the observation that this is a current problem and is not giving Canadians equal access.

As for the specific differences, I'm afraid I can't help you...sorry.

Peter
