GPA questions

I have a friend... yes, I know everyone says that... but I really do have a FRIEND who has a GPA that is under 3.0, and is very determined to become a physician. He completed his degree in Cellular/Molecular Biology. It seems pretty clear to me that he will not have any luck applying within Canada... does the same apply to the USA? I have no idea what sort of advice to offer him. Any suggestions?

Hey,

By the sounds of it, a degree with a GPA under 3.0 is going to get your friend nowhere. Unless there are a couple of outstanding years meshed in there (ie: with competitive GPAs around 3.7 or so), the only alternative is to start a second undergraduate degree and start pulling in better marks. If your friend is as determined to becoming a physician as you say s/he is, this should not be a problem. Otherwise, there are very few schools in Canada and the U.S. that will take someone with a GPA of less than 3.0. Of course, I don't know all the details here, and there may be more to the story, but at a glance, it seems that your friend has a ways to go in his/her medical school quest.

Best of luck!

Timmy

your friend could try applying to the caribbean. i heard that at some schools, the gpa range is 2.8 to 3.4. just don't quote me on this :)

Thanks for the help. I personally have developed an interest in optometry, and I am considering this as a future... do you think that my friend (with a GPA less than 3.0) may have any opportunity in a field such as this given the lower entrance requirements? Would you or anyone else have any idea where we may be able to find out the entrance requirements (regarding GPA) for optometry schools across the United States?

If your friend absolutely wants to pratice medicine, he could go into Oesteopathy in the states (lower GPA, don't remember how much), do a residency in neurosurgery or something and come back and pratice here in Canada. I don't know about the other provinces, but I know in Quebec, DO's who obtained a degree from a US university, can practice neurosurgery or any type of specialty at same title as an MD graduate from a Quebec med school.

I forgot to mention that if you want to practice in Quebec though, you must be given an equivalency by the college of physicians of Quebec. As to if this equivalency is easy to obtain, I have no idea...
