They are taking a very long time to set up its requirements page and application procedure page. Does anyone know what's going on and when things will move along? Guest eJaya Posted July 9, 2003 Report Share Posted July 9, 2003 Hi Premed81, This year's application was not online and had about 4 pages to fill in (aside from sheets for your references). I also think I had to send a couple of pages to one part of the university (the application fee and personal info) and the rest to another part. I'm not sure why Dal is taking a bit to put up the new requirements page but don't worry- Dal's application is much simpler than most schools with only two essay questions and small spaces to write about your extracurric's/volunteer, etc. Good Luck! I'd like to ask the two of you if you don't mind what your thoughts are on applying to Dalhousie. I am an Ontario student, so what do you think my chances are? Since both of you were accepted, do mind telling me what you think is crucial to getting Dalhousie's attention (ie. GPA, MCAT, EC's, essays, interview)? I am taking the MCAT in August, and my GPA is good (but no, I am not a 3.85 or 3.99999999 student). I have a lot to say about my volunteer work in the hospital, I work in a doctor's office of 3 female family physicians, and I'm doing a specialist program in molecular biology. Guest CaesarCornelius Posted July 10, 2003 Report Share Posted July 10, 2003 Dal's selection process is a bit of a mystery. They are very slow, but hopefully, thorough. For OOP applicants there are (I think) about 10 seats, and this year there were around 200 OOP applicants with 40 of those getting interviews. The cut-off's were 30MCAT and a 3.7 GPA on the Dal Scale. I think that once you have an interview they don't weight the marks as high. I also know that the OOP waitlist moves a lot faster than the in province one. The OOP waitlist moved something like 10 spots, whereas the inprovince one only moved 5. You need to have good marks, but I think once you have the interview, its everything else that counts. Even though dal has a non-ISM policy (no racism, no ageism....) I think that they are biased towards older applicants. By older I mean mid twenties (~25)... But of course, there are always people on either side of the curve.. Like me (22)... GL with the MCAT.. I would very much like to start my applicatoin since I am an out-of-province applicant. Also depending on the complexity of the application, I would like to have enough time to complete and submit it before the deadline. Anyhow, just wanted to know if anyone else knew anything. Guest dr octopus Posted August 1, 2003 Report Share Posted August 1, 2003 Okay, The application itself isn't that hard or complex or time-consuming to fill out - you should be able to take care of that in a day or two. The thing that will take time is the essays. Although I don't know if Dal is changing them this year, they have been the same for the past few years (why you want to study medicine, strengths & weaknesses & how they related to medicine, and, if you're like me, why you've taken some time off b/w degrees) - you can probably still find that online, and get a head start (but be careful if the essays are changed). The only other thing is references. If the application is not up yet, then the new reference sheets aren't up yet. But, it shouldn't be that hard to get a head start on your references - last year they wanted 3 people, at least one teacher, and no relatives - simply contact the people you want to be your references, and ask them if they'd be willing to provide a reference for you, and let them know that you'll be in touch as soon as you find out more. If you want to be as prepared as you can for when the applications come out, you'll also want to make a list (for the last 3-4 years) of your extracurricular & volunteer activities, your employment, your interests, how much time you spend doing these things, and who can verify that you've done these things. Well, from what you've explained, it doesn't sound complicated because it's actually quite similar to the other applications I've put together for OMSAS and AMCAS. I want to do a good job on the application too though so I like taking my time. But I don't have very much time because everything that I'm doing to increase my chances of getting accepted into med school takes A LOT OF TIME. Are you a Dalhousie med student? Thanks for the info. And, if you like taking your time to get things right, sounds like you're applying to the right province (a little Alexander Keith's reference for ya). Just remember - don't take time doing the things that will increase your chances of getting accepted to med school; take time doing the things you love. If you've got stuff you can speak passionately about in the interview, you've got it made in the shade. I haven't yet decided where I'm going in the fall, but I think I'll be making that decision by the end of the week. Who knows - come September, I may very well be representing the ol' Dalhizzle.
