Guest jmh2005
Block electives are just big chunks of time usually 4, 6 or 8 weeks in which you work full-time with a Physician or PhD doing clinical or research work (most students spend time doing clinical, but a few do research as well). After Unit 3 (July-August) we have 8 weeks of electives. You can do whatever you like pretty much and any area that interests you....this summer I'm doing 4 weeks emerg, and hopefully 2 wks of gen surgery and 2 weeks internal medicine... Block electives are also built into the clerkship year 4 weeks just prior to clerkship, 6 or 8 weeks just after clerkship and then there are 2 separate time periods during the clerkship where you do your electives (there are 8 rotations for clerkship and your rotation number determines when you will do your electives). Again, you can go wherever and do whatever you like. This is definately one of the big highlights of our program, lots of time to do what you want to do!!! Hope that helps!
