henslice
Has anyone considered both specialties? What were the factors that you weighed before you made a decision? Any insight into the fight for endovascular procedures? Thanks in advance.
Edict
I think Vascular is winning in Canada. IR still has plenty of procedures, but Vascular does most of the endovascular procedures related to their specialty afaik.
bamyloid
These are ultimately very very different specialties. In Canada, overall, its very centre dependent. In some busy centres on Ontario, IR does all peripheral angioplasty because VS is too busy. The IR folks also do vascular interventions that VS wouldn't do (TIPS for example) and non-vascular stuff as well (CT guided biopsies, lines, etc). Most of the vascular interventional radiologists have another year or have dedicated most of their IR fellowships to vascular. Most VS centres in Canada now do a mix of open and endo procedures but it is also very centre dependent. There will likely be a pendulum swing for AAA repair in the next 5-10 years as more patients are returning after long term followup with leaking EVARs. I think training will also reflect this. Ultimately, it is a surgical residency. Along with it comes long hours, tough call, a good amount of general surgery training, very busy/ sick ward/ ICU service to manage.
