Mcat Scores

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Sorry for another one of these threads but I was just wondering your take on the new MCAT 2015 and how it is going to be looked upon at MUN. I'm a New Brunswick resident and just got my score back today.. 123 (Chem/Phys- ugh, I know), 125 (CARS), 125 (Biological), 129 (Psych/Soc). Are my chances pretty much in the garbage given this poor Chem/Phys score?

Thanks guys!

A 125 in the new MCAT is more 8 in the previous MCAT, based on UBC's conversion.

"The “new” MCAT has a quite different scale. While still scored on a range of 14 intervals, the scores are reported from 118-132 instead of 1-15. The score of 124 was chosen because it is approximately comparable to our minimum requirement of 7 on each section of the “old” exam." http://mdprogram.med.ubc.ca/admissions/frequently-asked-questions/

Thanks for your response! I called the admissions office and was told that a "competitive" score is 500... which seemed kind of low to me - but I'll take it.

Hey munmed2015.

i also have no science background and did worse than you on chem/phys (sigh). haven't heard back from the admissions about an invitation yet, but wondering if you have. did you rewrite the mcat? will you rewrite it this spring if you don't get in? any tips on how you taught yourself chem/phys? i have a phd in social sciences and just am having the hardest time figuring chemistry and physics out all on my own.

I wrote the MCAT again and had a small improvement. I work 40 hours per week and was studying 30 hours on top of that. I found a tutor for chem and physics two months prior to the exam which was a huge help - however, I wish I had more time with them. I also had never taken a physics course in my life and high school was the last time I had learned chemistry!

I will definitely be rewriting again if I don't get in. However, I'm hoping the rest of my application will pull me through. There are still some people who have done exceptionally well on their MCAT with lots of extracurriculars who haven't heard back yet! Don't give up yet - but I'm definitely feeling the stress too ☺️

Wow! I'm really super impressed that you did as well as you did on the MCAT with a 40/hour a week job and no science background. I also work fulltime, have a 3 year old child, and so have found teaching myself the sciences from scratch to be a daunting task. I know I can excel in the classroom when it is my fulltime job.

Thanks for the tips re: tutors. I plan to hire a tutor this time around; and if i don't get an invite this week I'm going to start studying again in November, and get a tutor right off the bat to explain some baseline info.

I haven't given up - entirely! I have great ECs (i think anyway, although none of them are hospital related. I do do volunteer work on improving health care access in prisons, and work on ending sexual violence against women and girls, but that's as close to the health field as I get really.) I also have done a lot of research and have had a lot of success obtaining research grants, fellowships, and scholarships. But again, not in sciences or health but in social sciences with a slight health focus (my last research fellowship was looking at feminist reproductive health collectives and DIY diagnostic technologies in Spain). I don't know. Looking back I think maybe I didn't narrate my life, volunteer, and research experience enough to make the clear connection between my work and my desire to be in medicine, or how I came to this desire through my research and volunteer work. But...I really really want to be in medicine, like more than anything, so if I don't get in this time I'm going to hammer on that MCAT this spring, work harder at making my desires clearer, and apply again!

Good luck to you MUNmed2015! I think we're both gonna make it eventually....right? :)

Good luck to you as well. Hopefully we won't have to rewrite the MCAT. But yes, we will both make it eventually... we are determined to get there!

With regards to narrating your life, it's incredibly hard to do with such limited characters. Hope that your experiences speak for themself! Good luck again, keeping my fingers crossed!
