macd
Hi everyone, I am looking for honest opinions and also advice from successful non-trads on what to do next and things I should change to become a successful applicant. I decided on medicine quite late and the first two years of my undergrad was horrible due to personal/family issues. I decided to do two extra years (5th and 6th) and apply to schools which only look at two years rather than pursuing a second undergrad. Also planning on doing a masters after my 6th year as a back up option (public health most likely). 1st year: 1.86 2nd year: 2.34 3rd year: 3.22 4th year: 3.65 5th year first semester: 3.94 (BUT, OMSAS 3.86 I believe) (following the 3 out 5 rule for western as well) ECs: Volunteer: Research assistant- one year plus continuing Research assistant- four month Foodbank- one year plus continuing Youth mentor- six months plus continuing Patient visitor (with a developmental disability)- one year Hospital (clinical) -recently started Let's talk science - 4 months Work: Shoppers (cosmetician)- one and a half years plus continuing Hudson's bay (seasonal cosmetics sales associate) American apparel (seasonal) Food industry (Subway, pizza hut) - 5 years I don't have a lot of EC's as I worked a lot during high school and 1st/2nd year of university due to financial reasons. I am a certified professional make-up artist (I guess that would be my "hobby"). MCAT, I'm planning on writing this summer and goal is to achieve 520+. I know I have a long way to go, but I would appreciate any constructive criticism and ideas on what to do next. Should I continue with a 6th year? Is my plan reasonable? At times, I feel as though it's going to be impossible to get in, but I am still not ready to give up. Thank you all for your time and feedback! This is an ambitious goal. Don't worry if you don't get a 520+... many people get into med school with lower scores.
Meridian
Too many open questions still. Write the MCAT early summer 2017. Note 520+ is extremely difficult. Wait on your MCAT result & 5th year final GPA and decide on direction from there. Assume you will have completed degree requirements by end of fifth year ? The 6th year courses may need to be from upper (3/4) years to count. Look carefully at each school that lets you use last 2 years requirements. I actually already completed my degree requirements last year. These additional years are solely for med school purposes. This year I took six upper years courses to satisfy Western's requirements and planning on doing that next year as well with a thesis (assuming I continue on with a sixth year). You are right about taking the Mcat early this summer. Thanks!
