Verifiers: emailed or called?

I know majority of verifiers are emailed, but are they called as well? Or is that something they do if the verifier cant be reached through email? Hard to put down the number (or not appropriate to ask for a personal number, or language barrier) of some of my verifiers.

Hope you were able to resolve this before last Friday. Most of us have had verifiers contacted by email but you need to do your best to get phone numbers in case they decide to call yours.

It's hard to understand how someone would be willing to verify activities of yours but yet be unwilling to give you a number? Language barrier is going to be a tough one.
