Guest UBClebronjames
I applied to Sask last year and this is the rejection feedback they gave me in regards to my application (applicable to OOP). Hopes this helps others who are looking to apply. What you will see below is my initial email and then their reply: ************************ I received an rejection letter from U of Sask a few months ago and I was very curious to know the details of what I can improve on for next years application process. Is there a procedure to gain insight into my application pros and cons, as I am an out of province student. I would greatly appreciate any and all the feedback that I can possibly receive. In the remaining email I would like to ask some specific questions that hopefully you can answer. If you have any general or specific to my application comments please feel free to send them to me. Q1. What do I need to do (GPA, extracurriculars, MCAT) in each of the three categories listed to be on par with those that were accepted this year? A1. During my current academic year that I just completed I was fortunate enough to obtain a 89% average, which would bring my overall avg to roughly 82.2%. I also plan to take the MCAT again this summer as I feel that I can greatly improve all 4 sections. I have continued to involve myself in a variety of extracurricular activites throughout the year as well. Q2. What are my weaknesses? A2. Q3. Should I reply again; will it be worth my efforts? A3. If there is a guideline/checklist for evaluating applicants that I could obtain could you please let me know of them. ************************* and now the reply... ************************* In response to your inquiry regarding what you could do to enhance your application to the U of S, I can offer you the following: This year 225 out-of-province applicants applied for 6 seats designated for out-of-province students. Those with an average of 88% and above were invited for an interview, and we interviewed 40 individuals. With respect on how to enhance your application, the key variable for you is to improve your two-year academic GPA. This year, your GPA based on our conversion of your two best years was 83%. If you applied next year, we would combine your 89% average with your other best year, and you would have a GPA of 86%. For your information, the cut-off used to invite out-of-province applicants to an interview was 88% in 2001, 87% in 2000, and 87% in 1999. The cut-off of course depends upon the applicant pool in the year of admission, and I cannot predict what the cut-off will be next year. The difficulty of course lies in the fact that the out-of-province pool is extremely competitive. As it appears you will be awarded your B.Sc. this year, short of embarking upon a second degree program, or a graduate degree program of studies, your GPA will remain static. If you embark upon a Master's program, for applicants, who have completed or are completing a Masters thesis-based porgram, the average of all Master's grades will count as one full year combined with the best two full undergraduate years. Rewriting the MCAT would not benefit your application to the U of S as the MCAT is simply a requirement that must be met. It is not used for competitive ranking. As well, extracurricular activities, although an asset to you in an interview, are not assessed formally. I hope I have been able to help you in determining your next steps.
