3rd Year Program Requirements?

Hi guys,

As you may know, UofT undergrad no longer has 3-year programs. It also has no specific "3rd year requirements" for its programs; for example, my 4-year program has requirements for First Year, Second Year, and "Upper Years" (both third and fourth year).

So, for those who apply to med school from UofT undergrad at the beginning of third year, do schools in Ontario require that you have fulfilled either a 3-year degree or the 3rd year requirements for your program, before you can be accepted? I am asking because it seems that neither of those criteria can be satisfied with the programs at UofT undergrad.

If I will have completed SOME (at least 3 full credits) of the "Upper Years" requirements during my third year, would I be able to get a letter from my registrar's office stating that I will have fulfilled any such requirements that med schools may request?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

Hi there,

I wouldn't worry too much. Given the size of the UofT undergraduate population, and the annual percentage of that population that will be applying to Ontario medical schools, I'm sure, in the future, policy adjustments and/or special circumstances shall be afforded to students like yourself. :)

Cheers,

Kirsteen

Thanks for your reply, Kirsteen, but I still have a few unanswered questions.

Has anyone been in my position before, where you had completed at least 3 full credits of the "Upper Years" requirements during your third year? Were you able to get a letter from your registrar's office stating that you had fulfilled any such requirements that med schools may request?

Please note that I will have finished 15 full credits by the end of my third year, but not all of the credits will be "program requirements" (i.e., some will be optional courses taken for general interest).

Thanks.

I'm graduating this year, so I'm not in the same situation as you, but I do know what you mean. I would think that as long as you are on track to graduate after your fourth year, you should be fine. Although there are no specific 3rd year requirements, some 3rd year courses may be prerequisites for 4th year courses you are required to take. I'd recommend getting those completed this year. Also, you want to make sure that the remaining upper year program requirements can be completed during your fourth year, that is, don't leave 6 required courses to be done next year. I know most U of T specialist programs only have about 6 upper year requirements, so if you're doing 3 now, you should be okay.

Even if you don't plan to graduate, you should be in a position to do so later; first of all, to show the med schools that you are a serious student, and second, as a backup in case you don't get accepted this year.
