blueskyguy
Hi all, I have read about FM physicians in Canada working in Emergency Rooms, but can IM physicians work in Emergency Rooms? Is it common for IM physicians to work in the ER, or no? Thanks for any clarification.

You can do ER consults as internist, but I don't think that you can do a full ER shift as an internist, as it will be out of scope for you to see kids, pregnant woman, gynecological problems, minor surgical issues, psych issues. The family doctors who work in ER in GTA at least nowadays usually have +1 in emergency medicine. The rural FM residency prepares you well also to work in non-tertiary ED. medigeek
In the old days when you got a general license after an intern year, you could. Not really nowadays no, though I'm sure it happens in very remote areas sometimes. Ultimately you're not prepared for sick kids or Ob.
