What're the banks telling you?

I went and spoke to the bank regarding a line of credit and they told me that i couldn't access the funds until my first day of classes and that I needed to bring them a time table with my name on it. Are you guys gettting the same story or is it just me. I want to know before I go ahead with this stuff. This was with RBC by the way.

Hi there,

It sounds as though the release of funds and other stipulations are branch-dependent. Unless RBC has globally changed their policies re: LOCs for medical students, I received access to my LOC funds (all $150K of it) a week after the application was submitted, which was ~2 months before school began. I secured my LOC through the RBC reps at the University Ave. location in Toronto.

Cheers,

Kirsteen

I can understand them asking for some kind of documentation that you're actually a med student, though I don't know why it would need to be a timetable. Not being able to access funds until the start of classes sounds weird though. At BMO, I was asked when I needed the funds, and "immediately" was a perfectly acceptable answer.

Hey mg83,

Are you living in Edmonton right now (I thought maybe you were from some of your other posts)? If so make an appointment with Rhonda Smith at the RBC branch on Whyte Ave. I went to see her last week and she is very friendly and knows the ins and outs of the medical student LOC. All I needed to bring was some ID and my acceptance letter. I should probably get my new client card and the Platinum Avion Visa that I upgraded to (she even waived the $120 fee) in the mail next week and I can start using my LOC ASAP :P I was referred to her by a number of medical students and residents that have dealt with her and she's great.

My RBC one is already available. I can get you the name/email of the Calgary med student specialist if you want, but you should be able to set up in person in Edmonton.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I told my banker what your guys' experiences were and she caved to all of my demands....mwwhahaha. I don't know what she was trying to pull with trying to make me jump through all those hoops. Seriously she must think I'm completely retarded or something. Thanks again for the replies. It's good to feel like there's some other people I can talk to who are dealing with the same issues :D I feel so poor today because I just signed the final papers for purchasing my condo.

p.s

Lurker: You got it. I am from Edmonton.

Medsmurf: thanks for the contact info. I'll go see your banker if this one doesn't work out.

On the bright side, mg83 your condo has probably gone up by half a bazilion dollars since you signed so really you're now quite rich... at least until we run out of oil and the real-estate market crashes... :eek

yeah tell me about it. I was lucky because I got in at $5000 under the listed price and the morning after the woman accepted my offer the realtor told me that 2 people were looking to make offers the next morning so the condo would have gone for above the listed price. I'm happy with it. I feel like I got a deal, its right on 17th ave in Bankview, and it was just renovated. Plus underground parking which was my biggest selling point. I'll have a house warming party...you're all invited (as soon as I get a BBQ)!
