I think it's very useful to give a bit of an explanation at least for the 2-3 activities that really define who you are. It's a tremendous opportunity to give a short interview answer before getting an actual interview and it makes your CV much more personal. When I applied we could not submit a personal essay, so I inserted parts of what I would have liked to communicate in the CV.
