Email to referees

So I applied to 2 specialties, and matched to one. I already thanked the referees that provided me with letters for the specialty that I matched to. 

How would you recommend phrasing an email thanking the referees for the other specialty? It's super awkward... Should I even send one?

Of course you should! Don't overthink it. Write the same stuff. Maybe something about how much you look forward to carving out a unique niche in medicine with your interests in both fields. I'm just riffing!

Yes you should. No need for anything complicated, just that hey you were deciding between a few specialties and ultimately you settled on another one. Nothing wrong with that, and the focus of your email should be on thanking them anyway. If you think this is awkward, just imagine not doing this and running into them in person later on in your career...
