Practicing in the US as a Canadian trained GP

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if anyone can share about what the process is like for someone who is a GP in Canada to go and practice family medicine in the US? There is a 2 year vs 3 year training difference and am wondering if this needs to be made up for in any way? Also if anyone can shed some light with regards to needing to write the USMLEs and how VISA is granted to Canadian trained GPs. Thanks!

Just like Canada with each province having their own licence and licence requirements, each state will have it's own licensing board and requirements. So first think of the state you want to work in then go to their licensing board and see their requirements, or reach out to them. If you're not picky, check studentdoctor which has had threads in the past of which state boards have the simplest pathways, that are then recognized in other states.
