Guest slysniper
Let’s be honest. Most people do dentistry because it is financially rewarding. But, is this actually the case? or is it just a myth (like the one that says dentists are more likely to commit suicide). I mean are there jobs after graduation? I was talking to a friend of mine who is doing dental. He was saying that most cities are saturated and it is hard to find associate positions. Also, opening a business is costly too, not to forget the big student loan you already have. So, are we all running towards a mirage or a beautiful pond?(where we can rest and enjoy early retirement LOL)
Guest Dent08
There will be tons of jobs when we graduate. The average age of dentists is high. Several canadian schools are considering an increase in the # of seats they offer to meet the expected demand. An efficient dentist will have no problems paying off loans and living quite comfortably. We all have the right idea. Dentistry is a sweet way to make a living. Guest epzi
I agree, from talking to people who graduated last year, a GOOD position is not easy to find (a couple friends said that it took about 3-4 mo. for most of the people in their classes to get settled into offices they were comfortable with), but everyone is working now. I have heard of saturation in big cities, but from what I hear there should be a shortage in 4-5 years (word around UofA is that when the faculty moves into the new health science building in 2009 with med, hygiene, pharmacy etc. the class size may double, again this is just rumors i've heard). Guest Justanotherkeener
hey epzi, that's awesome that dentistry will move into the new building as well, so does this include the clinic areas as well (i.e. am I going to have brand new clinics to work in? ) Keener p.s. to keep on topic, apparently the U.S. is in the same situation as us, 7000 retiring annually with only 4000 grads replacing them
Guest epzi
Hey Keener, your in the 2009 class right? The clinics will be renovated as well (i would assume), so I guess your class would be using the new clinics. Have a good summer.
Guest orlinmyer
So here's my question, how much do dentists make? The "official" numbers are $30.38 an hour (www.jobfutures.ca/noc/3113.shtml ) and $80,100 per year (for BC residents www.workfutures.bc.ca/pro...te=graphic ). These numbers can't be right... Heck, a dental hygienist makes $26.18 an hour (www.jobfutures.ca/noc/3222.shtml ). Also, how much do specialists make, for example an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Hopefully someone can clear this up.
Guest Justanotherkeener
Epzi, I'm not in the class of 2009, I'm hoping to be in the class of 2010 though:) So that means I'll have the new clinics for another whole year, haha! Anyways, as another aside, how is the summer session coming along, doing the hands-on dentistry stuff seems like it would be a lot of fun. For orlinmyer, those numbers may be for salaried positions, which are always lower for dentists. Besides, salaries will vary a lot b/w dentists as hours, location, and market saturation have a big impact on net income. I wouldn't fret though, you more than likely won't be struggling to make a comfortable living. Keener
Guest epzi
Hey Keener, summer is good, we finished last week, good luck with next years application cycle. As for salary, its based on percentage for associates ie. 35-40% of billing is normal, so the faster you are, or the more chairs you have going, the more you make. From some the the dents that graduated 1-2 years ago they told me that if you don't make over 100k (or close to) in your first year out, your not working hard enough. On another note, i heard that the average salary 4 years ago for a recently graduating dentist was 85,000 (survey conducted by one of the 4th year classes) so it would make sense that the salary would be over 100k (or close to). Guest apical meristems
Hmm... It seems that the new dental clinic will be opening just as our class leaves. I'm imagining that the Department of Dentistry will remain in Dentistry/Pharamcy though, along with the main clinic. Later, ap
Guest Dent08
Word is that dent/pharm is going to become an administration building. It won't have anything to do with dentistry anymore.
Guest apical meristems
I can see that. It is a nice building with lots of history. Ok, after a little chat with my friend from the Registrar's Office - they would tear down Administration, open up QUAD and place the focus on the new Sciences Centre making its way to the Northern point. Administration would acquire Dentistry/Pharmacy and Dentistry, along with Pharmacy would move into the new Health Sciences facility.
Guest Justanotherkeener
Sounds cool, now the class of 2013 and onward won't have to walk back and forth from med sci to dent/pharm. The traffic in the education building is going to drop down:D Anyone have any new info on the rumored cirriculum changes? Keener
Guest slysniper
Well, I guess the topic has changed now to the new clinic. Intersting.
