InternalGene
I'm having trouble deciding if I want to go into Medical Genetics vs Internal Medicine subspecialties. Some of the Pros and Cons I came up with are as follows but wanted some general input if possible. Medical Genetics Pros - Niche Speciality - Apparently, call is very chill - Few procedures and emergencies are mostly birth defect consults which are rare - Residency seems chill - Good mix of clinical and research Cons - Pay isn't that good - Tied to an academic centre and pay is likely salary-based and controlled by Province - Future of Genetics is unclear (other specialties might just integrate genetics into their work) Internal Medicine (Personally looking at Infectious Disease, Oncology, Allergy, or Rheumatology) Pros - Good pay - Can set up a private clinic for specialties like Allergy and Rheumatology - Not locked into one speciality so more time to decide - Good variety in subspecialty Cons - Brutal Residency - Might go unmatched in the CARMS match which can be devastating Any residents or attending that can comment on whether I should go to Medical Genetics or Internal Medicine for any of the below subspecialties : - Infectious Disease - Oncology - Allergy - Rheumatology
anonymouspls
I dont think genetics lifestyle is that good, atleast thats what the residents were telling me when I did an elective in fourth year. I matched rad onc this year (biased), but … I think of all the specialties you listed internal with med onc subspecialty has the brightest future. allergy / rheum are also good lifestyle choices. ID I would say is the worst one with lowest pay and not good lifestyle.
