Blood Pressure Question

I understand that in adults, the systolic pressure is approximately 120 mmHg, and the diastolic pressure is approximately 70 to 80 mmHg, for healthy patients.

 

I also get that hypertension is usually defined as values above 140/90.

 

My question is the following:

What is the difference between hypertension on the systolic side vs. diastolic side?

i.e. if one value is normal but the other is considered hypertensive?

Does one need to be hypertensive on both sides to be at risk of complications?

Perhaps, like many of you, I was saddened to hear of John Ritter's death. Reading about his final day though, I was curious as to at least one of the symptoms he experienced due to his arterial problem. Can any of you who have covered this in school shed some light? Why would an arterial tear cause an individual to feel nauseous? Would it be due to the internal bleeding and potential loss of blood?
