I have some more questions about MUN's program. Some might be more directed toward upper years.

1st: Do most graduates of Memorial end up in family medicine?

2nd:How well does MUN provide ample opportunity to try many different types of medicine before having to decide on a discipline?

3rd: Is there any group-work/problem-based learning as a part of the program?

4th: What are the things that you would change about the curriculum?

Looking forward to any insight. Thanks.

I can't speak from personal experience, since I'm not at MUN yet (cross those fingers) but I've heard through firends that:

1. Im not sure of the exact percentage of MUN students that end up in family medicine, many do choose family medicine, but many other others shoose to specialize. MUN is very kean on promoting rural family medicine, with a two week visit in first year, for example, however, ultimately you choose a specialty based on your personality and interests.

2. MUN provides alot of opportunity to learn about the other specialties as well, there are the core rotations and electives of course, but MUN also organizes "specialty nights", and "resident nights" and the opportunity to shadow those in the profession of your interest. MUN itself offers residencies in the following specialities:Anesthesia, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, obstetrics/Gynecology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, psychiatry, Radiology, Neurology, Surgery, Pathology. They also have a 1 year extension to the family medicine residency in emergency medicine, preparing rural family physicians to work in rural emergency departments. CaRMs matches each medical student with the specialty of choice based on ranking, so even if you go to medical school at MUN, it doesn't mean you have to do your residency there, or that you even get a residency there.

3. MUN's curriculum is thaught through various methods, including lectures, labs, discussion groups, and POPs (Patient - oriented problem solving) MUN's version of PBL.

4. Since I don't go there I can't really answer this question, however I can say that I like to exposure to patients that the students get in first year through the rural visit. I like that the program is taught through a varity of methods, and that even though they have adopted PBL, traditional lectures are still integrated. I think this is great because a lot of students in schools that teach primarily PBL often get "lost" and behind, especially if they aren't the greatest with self-directed learning. I think lectures are a great way to make sure everyone is on the same page, and POPs is great because you actually get to use you brain, and figure out things for yourself, and hopefully that will help you remember it better.

All in all, and I am bias of course because I am a Newfie, but I think MUN is the best MedSchool in Canada, it has small class sizes, and great relationships between faculty and students. ANd of course it's Home!! It's my number one choice so I'm crossing my fingers and toes :)

1. Family medicine continues to be the most popular specialty amongst graduates at memorial (I believe somewhere around 50% go into family). that being said, I think the most popular specialty at most canadian med schools is family medicine.

2. you are requried to to mandatory rotations in all the core speciaties (family, internal, surgery, obs/gyn, psych, peds). After that, you have electives and selectives that you can take at any institution in Canada or US. So, if you're interested in plastics or optho or something and want to do a rotation at a bigger centre (i.e. Toronto), then you can, no prob.

3. Previous post answered this pretty well - we have POPS sessions every once in a while. Some people like 'em, others don't. I personally think they're good, I usually get alot out of them.

4. I can only speak on the 1st year. I think there should be more anatomy labs in the 1st semsester. This is duifficult however bevcause they are labor-intensive (to teach 1 anatomy lab you need 5 docs to cover all 5 labs).

I'd also add more POPS sessions, and start teaching examination skills earlier in the program.

Hi guys! I really appreciate those in depth comments.

I really like the idea of lectures integrated with group-learning.

stevetilley, is there anywhere I can view a typical 1st or 2nd year timetable? I tried to check on the webpage - but I don't have access.

How often are these group learning sessions? A few times a week? Or less frequent?

Thanks for your help.
