Writing Sample Suggestion

"Great leaders are born, not made".

 

This is one of the Kaplan MCAT prompts that I'm having trouble with, becuase I can't seem to find a good idea for the opposite of the above statement: "Great leaders are made, nor born".

 

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could tackle this part of my essay?

Ok, it's into the home stretch studying for the MCAT, and I'm still struggling with the writing sample. Specifically I don't quite know how to demonstrate "complexity and depth of thought" for task 1, which is one of the things the good folks at Kaplan say the MCAT evalutors are looking for.

 

I've tried to imagine explaining the statement to an intelligent 15-year-old, and tried asking myself questions about the statement's philosophical and historical context, but still more often than not I come up dry. Does anybody have some tips for task 1? I'm getting a little tired of staring at prompts going "I can't explain this, it's bloody obvious!"

I was wondering if we are allowed to take mechanical lead pencils into the exam.

 

Also, I am trying to figure out when the exam will roughly end. My MCAT info sheet says that i should be at the location at 8:00. Does that mean the exam will start soon after...as in 8:30ish?

<pagetext>Some good practical advise:

 

- Get there early. If you're using public transportation, check to see what time it starts and the frequency of trips on the weekend.

 

- DO NOT FORGET THE REGISTRATION CARD!!! Make sure it has your picture on it!!

 

- Bring your own lunch so you don't waste your lunch break in a long line checking your watch every 10 seconds. Maybe read the front section of the newspaper at lunch to get more eamples for the WS section.

 

- Ignore those losers who purposely walk around saying, loudly, "Did you study this?!" or "Oh my God, I just heard this is on the test!" Don't talk to anyone about prep work on the day of. In fact, don't talk to anyone before the test. Just get into your zone.

 

- If using an analog watch, reset the time to 12:00 at the start of each section to make it easy to tell how much time you have left.

 

- DON'T FORGET SEVERAL BLACK PENS! (no felt tip). Bring lots of HB pencils and a really good eraser. One incompletely erased mark on this test could cost you big.

 

- Don't bring something that beeps thinking they'll let you get away with it if. If they take your only watch, you're screwed. They won't let you use a cell. Get a watch that goes silent at walmart and return it if you have to!

 

- Drop your pencil AS SOON as they call time. If a mean proctor catches you writing anything after, I believe a note will be sent detailing the incident to the AAMC, and potentially every school you ever apply to.

 

- Go to the washroom before each section and don't drink too much. Dress in layers to deal with too much or too little AC.

 

- Relax, and have confidence in yourself. GOOD LUCK!!!
