2003 Statistical Summary

Here's a summary I got from the Fac of Medicine after I was cleaning my room:

 

Number of Applications - 929

BC - 703

OOP - 226

 

Ineligible Applications

BC - 37

OOP - 28

 

Therefore, 666 (:evil ) applications were received from BC applicants.

 

25 for academics

25 for extra-curricular - Ref letters, extracurric activities, and autobiographical essay are assessed for non-academic qualities listed in calendar (Failure to score well on NA section does not mean applicant fails in achieving those qualities, just wasn't evident from material in file)

 

Interviews:

Median score out of 50 required for in-province

40.5/50 for OOP

 

23 OOP were interviewed out of 198 eligible OOP.

 

MD/PhD:

31 applications (21 BC and 10 OOP). Only 30 eligible and 23 invited for interviews.

HI,

 

i may be looking into this too much, but it seems like the the averages in the academic section and the file review portion are about the same for applicants interviewed and those finally accepted. the biggest discrepancy was in the interview portion. would it be in accurate to assume that in general, the interview will make or break you? Does anyone know if the file review is done before the interview section or do they only use the academic/MCAT in determining who gets an interview?

Hi there,

 

Both, academic and non-academic factors are used by UBC to determine who receives an interview--it used to be a proportion of 0.50 for each component (this may have changed this year given the changes that have been made to the selection process).

 

As to the weight of the interview in the final stage of the selection process, it is thought to account for a good chunk of the overall ranking score.
