How long does it take to become ER doc?

Hi, I was wondering how long it would take to become an ER doc. I heard that there are 2 different Emergency Medicine Rotations a 4 year program and a more comprehensive 5 year program.

 

So I was just wondering while people are on the topic of how long it takes for a certain specialty, how long something like this would take.

 

4 years undergrad

4 years med school (maybe 3 for McMaster and Calgary)

5 Year residency

 

Total of 13 years. Is that right?

You can do a five year EM residency, so as you've mentioned above, the timeline is 13 years. This is the "full" EM residency that qualifies you to work everywhere. You can also do a two year family medicine residency, and then a supplemental third year of Emerg, and get an Emerg certification that way, but you may not be able to work everywhere in Canada with that, as some hospitals only hire EM doctors who have completed the full five year residency.

 

By the way, PGY refers to Post-Graduate Year. Therefore, a PGY-1 student has graduated medical school last year, and is in his/her first year of residency. A PGY-5 student would be in his/her fifth year of residency.
