interviews feedback

This questions I asked before, but nobody knows :

This is particularily relates to the MMIs at Macmaster and NOSM:

I have read that some people changed some approach, or I guess have understood what they did wrong, or how to approach the questions differently.

I am not to imply that the inteviewes are impersonal, but what did you improve. What was the benefit of talking to other peers.

anyway, here the questions:

I was just wondering, to those who did their interviews couple of times:

1) Did you change anything for the year you were accepted.

2) What mistakes do you think you did during the previous years.

3) How did you prepare for this year (that was different from previuos years)

4) What are the most important factors they are looking for (well you think) ?

5) What to do/not to do during the interview day

thanks for any feedback

I didn't interview twice at Mac... but I did go thru the interview process twice. That said, I think there are several things that you can do to buff-up for interviews:

1. Know yourself well and why your personal traits would make you a good physician.

2. Interviewing & communication is a skill. Some people are naturals when it comes to self-promotion... other aren't. Self-promotion can be learned. Emotional Intelligence by D. Goleman-- I think is a good read: http://www.amazon.com/Emotional-Intelligence-Matter-More-Than/dp/0553375067

Any "how to ace-an-interview-book" (e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Perfect-Interview-S/dp/0099406187 ) is probably useful.

3. Read a good ethics books-- so you can nail any ethics question. My advice is Hebert's book - Doing Right A Practical Guide to Ethics for Medical Trainees and Physicians - http://www.oup.com/uk/catalogue/?ci=9780195411041 Most consider it the best Canadian medical ethics book out there. Aside from that... I think it is an interesting read.

4. Know the process. Read about MMIs. -- http://files.myweb.med.ucalgary.ca/files/62/files/unprotected/MMI_FAQ.pdf#search=%22MMI%2C%20mcmaster%22

5. Know your health care issues. CP Shah's book - Public Health and Preventive Medicine in Canada, 5th Edition ( http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/product.jsp?isbn=9780920513934 ) is good for this... and it is great for insomnia too. :P

6. Practise. Practise. Practise. Your local career centre may have practise interview sessions... http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:EqBf11zixp0J:www.newcollege.utoronto.ca/applicants-students/registered-students/grad-students.html+practise+interview,+toronto,+university,+career+centre&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1

Good Luck!
