Guest emkie
Hello there, I'm currently a high school student exploring options for university as I intend to go in September 2006. I plan to get my Bachelor of Commerce degree, but I was wondering if it is possible for me to take a minor (or just electives?) in science (biology and chemistry) so I am still able to meet all of the prerequisites to get into med school after my undergrad degree? Has anyone ever done this, or know if it is possible? Thanks in advance!
Guest Jochi1543
I was an Econ major, dropped it halfway.....now I'm a Japanese major. Had I not done Econ at all, I would've definitely been able to finish my pre-med pre-requisites before I graduate. But because I didn't take any science my freshman and sophomore year, and am on study abroad for a semester now (no science courses offered), I do have Orgo and Biochem left to take after I graduate. It's absolutely possible to major in a non-science course and get your pre-reqs done on time. Declaring a minor in science is not necessary either, but of course if you are really interested in learning one branch of science in more depth, go for the minor. Guest 007
I would investigate the individual schools you are applying to and how many electives you get to take per year. You may end up having to take some of the courses in the summer. There are quite a few pre-reqs that you currently need for medicine, but these requirements are also changing. I've included the link for the Queen's BCOM program (my school ), but I can't find the actual course information. Your best bet may be to contact them through the email address listed at the bottom of the page and ask them about room for electives. business.queensu.ca/bcom/index.htm
Guest Steve U of T
The B.Comm. program at U of T seems to have enough flexibility for that. A friend of mine did a B.Comm. (specialist in finance) with a major in economics, and a minor in chemistry. He also took 2.0 credits of biology courses. I think the major in economics partly overlapped with his specialist program, but not entirely. Between that and the minor in chem, he probably could have done all the medicine prerequisites if he wanted to.
Guest medeng
I had a friend in Queen's BCom who did a minor in comp. sci., and another friend who did Engineering/BCom, but she ended up doing extra years... It is definitely possible, but you need to be willing to do some extra work!
