Any Nice People Care to Help Me?

Hi, this is my first post, and I sometimes skim the forums and have noticed over the past few months that everyone here is very knowledgeable and well mannered so I hope maybe you guys can take some time out of your busy schedule to help me.

 

I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. Im in 12th grade and I want to pursue a career in the health profession, specifically medicine. I was wondering which university you guys would recommend among my choices. So far I like Guelph, York, Western and McMaster. However, I've narrowed this list down to either Western or McMaster.

 

Basically my main question is which university should I go to for my undergraduate years. I know it doesn't make a difference to the med schools which one I do attend, but I'm taking into consideration the difference between the quality of professors at both universities (UWO and Mac), the ease, the quality of campus' etc.. Which one would better my chances of getting into medicine and which one is overall a better choice?

 

I know Mac has a hugggge science program so I don't want to be in classes of like a gazillion science students. Western supposedly has @#%$ professors and its really getting a little too wild there in terms of night life... If any of you did your undergraduate years at Western or McMaster, can you please give me an analysis of how things went for you. I'd also love to hear from those of you who went to Guelph or York for your undergraduate years if you want but ANY HELP from ANYONE is welcome.

I remember coming across this site as well as premed101.com about 3 or so years ago while I was still in grade 11, avidly seeking anything and everything about med school and the medical profession. I can remember how I was always asking all of these questions about residencies and what courses I needed, and this and that. Most of the time I got the answers with the addition of “your only in grade 11, just enjoy life until you have to make these decisions”.

 

Well I finished grade 11 and grade 12, took a year off and here I am with acceptance to McMaster for next fall; my desire to go into medicine only stronger. As a result of this, I have had to look at medical school requirements to ensure I am not limiting myself by what courses I am choosing now. Along with that I took another look at the premed101.com site along with this forum (although I forgot my old username so I had to make this new one). While I am not applying to medical school just yet, I found the information in both the forum and the site to be priceless. It helps to give you a direction and a look into the process of becoming a medical student that otherwise might not be that well known. Especially now, as an incoming undergrad I found the information just that much more relevant and important to my own situation, and I have no doubt when the times comes for med school applications or the MCAT (gulp) I’ll be consulting this site more and more.

 

I won’t go on a big huge rant here (your all saying “too late”, I know hehe), but I just wanted to extend my thanks and praise to Ian for keeping up a wonderful resource for so many people in Canada and beyond. As well as a big thanks to all of the other staff on the boards who are either med students or docs themselves, for giving their time to help the rest of us out!

 

Hope to be able to scream that YEAH I GOT IN, message in about 3-4 years
