CaRMS - province-dependent?

Hi everyone...

Just curious (I'm very unfamiliar with this process), but do the CaRMS matches have different criteria/preferences for in-province versus out-of-province applicants like in medical school admissions? Or is it completely based on the person themselves?

Hi there,

Based on what I've experienced and read about this year's process, CaRMS selection factors do not officially include province of residency. That being said, there is probably a correlation between applicants' home schools and the probability of matching there. This is based on the fact that this relationship is confounded by the fact that students have the best chance of gaining exposure to the decision-makers, or faculty who know those decision-makers at their home school. This is also based on the assumption that who you know (or those who know you) is an important factor in the CaRMS selection process.

Cheers,

Kirsteen

On the CaRMS websites for the stats for each program at each school they have the % of home applicants admitted or something like that. AND you can look at the more general match stats to see who went where/stayed at their home school.

Hey,

The individual program descriptions usually feature a % of out-of-town applicants admitted at the top, which describes the number of people matching there who didn't also go to the medical school there.

There are a ton of "unofficial" factors that go into admission/ranking/matching decisions, just as there are for any position where there are more candidates than there are positions. While it is probable that the majority of decisions are made based on factors having to do with the individuals interviewed, province or area of origin can play a major role in allowing a program to decide whether or not a person is likely to rank their program highly or not and then adjust their rank order lists accordingly. Nothing is official here- it is all a part of the gamesmanship that is the CaRMS process.
