<title>COMPASS question: NSERC undergrad = award or research?</title>

<pagetext>I had NSERC undergrad fellowships for 2 summers. Are these classified as research or awards?

thanks

If you apply to Ottawa, then I think they are strict about putting it under "awards". I didn't apply to Ottawa and put mine under research, though.

Hi there,

They're a pretty prestigious category of awards, that's for sure. :) I think it may be safely assumed that you are conducting research if awarded an NSERC; therefore, I'd place it within the "awards" section, and if you have any extra space, add a few words to describe the research completed due to allocation of those funds.

Cheers,

Kirsteen

I think that in all of teh Ontario schools except for U of T, the sketch itself isn't evaluated, but only used to tell your interviewers a bit about you. So, there aren't really any overly strict guidelines on how to fill it out. For instance, myself, I worked as a research assistant during undergrad and worked on several studies and even got my name mentioned on some presentations. So, I wrote the research assistant position under 'employment', the various research projects I worked on under 'research' and the co-authorships under 'accomplishments'. I think you should put the NSERC award under 'awards' and the title of your actual research project under 'research'. Hope this is helpful!

take care,

Blackbird

P.S. I didn't apply to U of O, but I think they have a separate sketch which IS evaluated.

This is good advice - I am applying to U of O.

Now, since one of those NSERCs was on a co-op work term, do I list it as research, award, and work experience too? (ha, just kidding)

Its 11:00am on Oct 15 and OMSAS application is like normal!!! NO waiting, error messages, lag time. Some possibilities:

1. OMSAS updated servers (highly unlikely)

2. Most people have submitted their application

3. Most people (me for one) have just stopped trying NOW because the deadline was extended (just more procastination)

4. I'm logging on during a period where all the applicants are not (again highly unlikely

I hope its number 2 (not 3) cuz then i can breeze through :P

<title>Verifiers - are my apps disqualified?</title>

<pagetext>I have some potential app problems and I have already submitted:

The OMSAS FAQ said that, while all schools require verifiers, only the Toronto essay requires references to verifiers in brackets, so I don't have verifier references in the auto sketch even though I am applying to Toronto. I have read posts here that say that you need these references. Will my app be disqualified?

The auto sketch automatically puts the entries in chronological order even if you don't enter them in order. So, this being the computer age and all, I thought the same would apply for the Ottawa detailed sketch. After I submitted my application, I noticed that the Ottawa sketch is all out of whack, chronologically. Am I screwed or is it all sorted when printing out the apps for the individual schools?

I wish I would have found this site before I submitted my application. But that's the way it always happens, right? There's a lot of good information here. Thanks for any help guys.
