If you had to do it all over again....

Here's a little quiz that might have been helpful for me when I was pre-med.

So you really want to be a doctor?

How come a doctor and not another health care profession?

What? You've looked into all the other health care professions?

Here, I'll ask a few quick questions to confirm that.

1. What does a nurse do during a typical shift?

What are the reasons you don't want to be an RN?

2. What does a paramedic do during a typical shift?

What are the reasons you don't want to be an EMT?

3. What does a respiratory therapist do during a typical shift?

What are the reasons you don't want to become an RT?

4. What does a LPN (or in some provinces, RPN) do during a typical shift?

What are the reasons you don't want to be a LPN/RPN?

5. What does a perfusionist do during a typical shift?

What are the reasons you don't want to become a perfusionist?

If you answered "What on earth is a ___?" to any one of the above, perhaps figure that out before applying for medicine.

The introspection that you do in order to answer part (B) of each of these questions will difficult, but it will be very helpful come your application essay and interview. Adcoms love applicants who can clearly define their motives for medicine.
