IM personal letters

Quick question, for schools that give no information on what they are looking for in their personal letters, what is a 'good' length. I realize that there are a ton of IM applicants, so an especially long letter, I imagine, would possibly be a detriment to one's application. But what is too long? I was thinking of the 800-1000 word range....but really had no idea. Ive read longer and shorter ones, but all were for other disciplines.

Thanks

when i started writing, i thought it would be impossible to say what i wanted to say in 500 words (which some programs, not im, have stipulated). however, it didn't turn out too badly.

i would say 600-700 words is a good length. It's about 1.25-1.5 pages, gets your message across, and is not too long.
