Absolute Minimum Requirements

Candidates must meet the following requirements to apply for admission to the Northern Ontario Medical School:

- A 4 year undergraduate degree*

- Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant) status

- An overall OMSAS converted average of 3.00 on the 4.00 scale

*unless applying as a Mature Student

How will the GPA be calculated?

The GPA will be calculated by taking the last three years of your four year degree. As well, it will be weighted so that the fourth year marks will count more than the third year which in turn will count more than the second year.

There are no course prerequisites for admission

We are looking for students from a variety of backgrounds who have a balanced undergraduate education. It is recommended that students broaden a Science degree with at least 2 full year courses in arts, humanities and/or social sciences, or an Arts degree with at least 2 full year science courses. If you are an Arts student looking for direction with respect to science courses, it is your choice, but consider biology , biochemistry and chemistry. Degrees in engineering, nursing, commerce, etc., are acceptable as long as they are 4 year degrees, though the Admissions Committee will still be looking at the nature of the electives undertaken during these degree programs.

Additional Admissions criteria

In addition to the minimum requirements there are many qualities that the Northern Ontario Medical School is looking for in students. The criteria used in the assessment of applicants include, but are not limited to:

- the applicant’s residency history, i.e. time spent living in a northern urban, rural and/or remote community

- a demonstrated interest in living and working in northern urban, rural and/or remote communities

- a demonstrated interest in working with underserviced populations (wherever they are)

- crosscultural experiences

- community involvement, volunteer work

- research and publications

- experiences, both structured and nonstructured, that demonstrate an ability to determine needs in one’s community and a willingness to play a part in filling those needs

Admission inquiries can be submitted through the inquiry form or write to nomsadmit@normed.ca .
