UofS2010
The Sask budget was unveiled yesterday, and here is some news that will be useful for Premeds: The number of seats in the medical school from 68 (class of 2011) to 84 for the class of 2012, (with plans for 100 three years from now) There are also other plans in works for physician retention in Saskatchewan, but these are still in the works, with ideas including $20000 in tuition retention over 7 years. reminisce
thanks for the update. any information regarding how many of the 84 seats will be IP/OOP/equity?
ccoh
I don't think they changed the number of OOP seats, so unless we hear otherwise, it's still 6.
forkdork
Is the school required to abide by this funding scheme? Is it not up to the university as to whether they will give 4 more seats rather the provincial budget? Either way, 10% of the seats are allocated for natives. 10%= 8.4 seats, one would hope that they round down in order to give all of the other "races" a more equal chance but who knows. Maybe they'll find some halfsy to fill that 4/10ths of a seat.
reminisce
i believe only 2 of those seats were actually accepted by aboriginal applicants. do the remaining seats go to OOP or IP?

Maybe they'll find some halfsy to fill that 4/10ths of a seat. While it might be up to the school to decide if they want to take the money and educate four more medical students, it wouldn't make much sense for them not to given the shortage of physicians in the province. The university has been in talks with the government so knows that the plan is to get to 100 seats by 2011. This is a step towards achieving that. As far as the aboriginal seats go, I'm not too sure but like has been said, if only two were filled last year, that might be indicative of how things will go this year. The remaining seats would most likely go to in province applicants. I suspect that the out of province seats will remain at 6.
surgimus
I spoke with the college today, I was tentatively told 6 out of province, 9 equity seats, and 69 in province. I don't imagine that all 9 equity seats will be filled, remaining ones will go into the IP pool.
