Ian Wong
I think as long as you don't start post-graduate training, you would never be forced into the second round. However, realize that your odds of matching in the first round are best the first time through CaRMS. If you go unmatched that year, and reapply the next year, at some programs, you will be seen as possible damaged goods. I've never heard of anyone who purposefully would consider going unmatched for a second straight time through CaRMS, with the intention of trying for the first round in the third following year. This isn't like applying for med school for several consecutive years. Each year you spend after graduating from med school and not doing clinical training is another year of massive debt compounding from med school, as well as progressive atrophying of your clinical skills.
