Guest copacetic
i have heard that the job market for pathology in canada is crap, especially if you want a job in a major centre. i have even heard of some canadian pathoogists applying to go to australia and practice because of the situation. just how bad is the situation? especially with increasing competition coming from down south which has a huge oversupply of pathologists. NLengr
I've heard completely the opposite. Maybe it depends on your current/desired location in the country.
Beekeeper
Yeah there definitely isn't an oversupply of pathologists by any means.
Guest copacetic
whats to stop the path folks down south from flooding our market? and why is it that AP and CP residencies are split up in canada, and combined in the states?
ploughboy
Thirded. I'm not interested in path, but I understand that there's lots of demand for the specialty now and in the future.
Satsuma
From what I have briefly read on the subject, I don`t think it is the demand that is lacking so much as acceptable work conditions. However, I have also read that pathology will likely be expecting increased funding to address this issue.

Beekeeper
Working conditions = enormous workload for a limited number of people?

seprehon
Anyone else have insight into this?? From googling around (and reading SDN), it seems the job market for pathologists in the US is really bad, although I haven't found that much info about Canada... Satsuma
work conditions? not enough resources is that what you mean? Yes not enough ressources, not enough pathologists for the workload etc. Unlike working on a hospital ward where you have a limited number of pt beds....the lab never says, we can no longer accept samples/specimens. They just keep on accepting whatever comes their way. With a shortage of pathologists, many older pathologists feel pressure to work and fill the need even if they should be retired...working long hours to get through the number of cases accumulating etc can lead to errors at times.
