Late Reference Letters

It says in the OMSAS instruction booklet that reference letters after October 15 would be accepted. Does it reflect badly on the applicant if a referee can't get the letter out there in time for October 15 (i.e. the letter is a week late)? Do med schools know if the letter arrives late?
