another reference letter question

Recommended Posts

Hi - I'd appreciate some help with this :)

I'm thinking about asking my preceptor for a reference letter for next year - unfortunately, he is new to Canada (originally from Europe) and isn't really familiar with CaRMS or the medical education system here. So, what instructions should I provide/should I do to make it easier for him to write a letter (aside from providing a CV, guidelines from CaRMS)? Thanks!!

You can gently inquire if he would like a tips sheet on what makes a strong reference letter (I've seen these in books and on the internet - examples include the use of specific anecdotes to illustrate one's points). If you are really on the ball, providing your personal statement would also be helpful, as well as examples of points you would like him to emphasize (e.g. refreshing your preceptor's memory of things you did together, positive evaluations you've received). Don't forget to provide the envelope :)
